PDF to DWG

PDF to DWG conversion, rebuilt as real geometry.

Send us a PDF and get back a DWG you can actually work in: lines, polylines, arcs, circles, text and dimensions as true CAD entities on proper layers. Not an image dropped into model space, and not a mess of disconnected polylines.

This page is for PDFs that came from CAD

A PDF plotted or exported from CAD still carries its geometry, so conversion is fast and precise. The work is rebuilding structure the PDF threw away: layers, blocks, real dimension objects, editable text. If your PDF is a scan of a paper drawing, the job is a different one and it's covered on our scanned and hand-drawn page. There's no vector data to work with, so the sheet is rebuilt from the image. Not sure which you have? Send it and we'll tell you.

What you get

  • True CAD entities: lines, polylines, arcs, circles, splines, not traced outlines
  • Proper layer separation, with walls, dimensions, text and hatching apart from one another
  • Editable text and dimensions, drawn to real-world units
  • Your target AutoCAD version, or DXF if you prefer
  • Title block and annotation rebuilt to match the source

Who it's for

Architecture and engineering practices working from client-supplied PDFs. Contractors handed a drawing set with no native files. Property owners with a PDF archive and no CAD. Drafting firms subcontracting overflow.

FAQ

Common questions

Can software do this automatically?

Automated conversion can pull vectors out of a PDF, but it cannot rebuild what the PDF discarded. A PDF has no layers, no blocks, no real dimension objects and no editable text, so a machine result hands you geometry without any of the structure that makes a DWG workable. Rebuilding that structure is the job. Send one sheet and we will convert part of it free, so you can see the difference on your own drawing.

My PDF is a scan inside a PDF. Can you still convert it?

Yes, and it's the most common thing we're sent. There's no vector data to extract, so the sheet is rebuilt from the image and calibrated against the printed dimensions. That's covered in detail on our scanned and hand-drawn page. Same rate, same turnaround, unless the original is badly faded or was reduced when printed, which adds $40 for that sheet.

Will my layers and blocks come through?

We build the layer structure, since a PDF doesn't carry one. By default we use AIA layering. Send us your own layer standard, template or a sample DWG and we'll map everything onto it instead, for 15% on top.
